Tyler Strafaci, who played in two Monroe Invitationals, won the 2020 United States Amateur Championship at Bandon Dunes, Oregon on Sunday, August 16th. It marked the second year in a row that a Monroe participant won the nations’ top amateur event. Andy Ogletree, who won the 2019 Monroe also won the ’19 U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst. Both players were also teammates at Georgia Tech.
The 22-year-old Strafaci defeated Charles “Ollie” Osborne 1 up in the dramatic 36-hole match played through a thick ocean fog. He birdied the final hole to claim the U.S. Amateur title. Strafaci defeated Segundo Oliva Pinto in the round of 16. Oliva Pinto finished second in the 2019 Monroe.
Tyler finished 24th in the 2019 Monroe. At the 2017 Monroe, he took the first-round lead with a five under 65, before finishing seventh.
Strafaci caddied for Ogletree when Andy won the ’19 U.S. Amateur. Ogletree played in the 2020 Amateur, but did not qualify for match-play.
The 80th Monroe Invitational in 2021 will be played the week of July 5th.
