The Monroe Invitational Championship is one of the longest running, high level amateur tournaments in the United States. The tournament began in 1937 and has been held annually every year except during World War II (1942-1945). Tiger Woods played in the Monroe in 1993 when it was a match play event. Tiger was defeated by eventual champion Tom Creavy in the semifinals. Many of the world’s greatest golfers and major champions have also played in the Monroe. Dustin Johnson (2007), Thomas Pieters (2012) and Andy Ogletree (2019) are among the prestigious list of Monroe Champions. Several U.S. Amateur champions are also Monroe Champions, including Ogletree, Sam Urzetta, Robert “Skee” Riegel and Fred Ridley. Ridley, the 1976 Monroe winner, went on to become Chairman of Augusta National.
